Red Light Therapy Distance & Session Time: Safe Starting Guide
Red light therapy distance and session time cannot be chosen from one universal internet rule. The correct setup depends on the device's wavelength, output, treatment area, instructions and the outcome you are tracking. A longer session or shorter distance is not automatically better.
Why distance matters
The light reaching the skin changes with distance, but the relationship depends on the device and how output was measured. A specification measured at one point cannot be transferred to every other point. If the manufacturer does not state measurement conditions, treat the number cautiously.
How to build a session
- Choose one target area and keep the setup consistent.
- Position the panel at the instructed distance.
- Use the instructed timer; do not add minutes to chase a stronger sensation.
- Record warmth, skin comfort and the one outcome you are evaluating.
- Stop for persistent redness, pain, eye symptoms or excessive heat.
What if the result is not obvious?
Do not immediately move closer or increase frequency. Check whether the routine matches the manual, whether the target is defined and whether other factors changed. Research on photobiomodulation uses different protocols; a result from one study is not a prescription for every panel.

Read the evidence and safety guide and compare the Resty red light collection by format and coverage.
Eye and health precautions
Follow the manufacturer's eye-safety instructions and do not stare into bright LEDs. Ask a qualified clinician before use if you have a light-sensitive condition, take photosensitising medication, have an eye condition or are recovering from a procedure.
A safe session is one you can repeat comfortably at the stated settings. The goal is a clear routine, not the highest possible exposure.
