Mouth Tape for Sleep in the Netherlands: What to Know
In the Netherlands, people may search for mondpleister, mouth tape or slaap-tape when they want to keep the lips gently together at night. The terms describe a product category, not a treatment. The sensible starting point is the same everywhere: can you breathe comfortably through your nose, and is there any sign that snoring or breathing needs assessment?
What mondpleister is intended to do
A sleep mouth-tape strip gives the lips a gentle reminder to stay together. Some users choose it because they dislike waking with a dry mouth or want to practise a calmer nasal-breathing routine. Those are personal goals, not guaranteed physiological outcomes.
Mouth tape cannot remove swollen tissue, correct a deviated septum, open the throat or diagnose a sleep disorder. If your nose is blocked or you feel air hunger, do not apply it.
How to approach nasal breathing first
- Notice whether congestion is occasional or persistent.
- Address allergies, colds or ongoing obstruction with appropriate advice.
- Consider an external nasal strip only for the outside of the nose and only when the skin is healthy.
- Test any product while awake before considering it at bedtime.
Nasal strips can make the front of the nose feel more open, but they do not treat sleep apnoea or every cause of snoring. Mouth tape should never be used to compensate for a blocked nose.
What research says about mouth taping
The 2025 systematic review in PLOS One examined ten studies involving 213 patients. Results were mixed, the evidence base was small and several studies excluded people with nasal obstruction. The review also described potential risk when people apply the trend indiscriminately.
That does not mean every adult will have the same experience. It does mean the product should be approached conservatively and never presented as a cure or a replacement for clinical care.
When to seek assessment
- Loud snoring with gasping, choking or witnessed breathing pauses.
- Severe daytime sleepiness, morning headaches or unrefreshing sleep.
- Persistent nasal blockage or a history of airway problems.
- Panic, breathing discomfort or irritation when testing mouth tape.
A clear explanation of a symptom is more valuable than a stronger strip. Use mondpleister only as a cautious lifestyle product, if it is appropriate for you at all.
